The kwakiutl lived in very long houses that can be 100 feet long . They specifically used cedar planks, with bark to use as roofs. The houses could hold up to fifty people. Today, Kwakiutl still make cedar plank buildings, but they only use them for ceremonial purposes. Kwakiutl use houses and apartments for housing today. The entrance of a Kwakiutl house had a totem pole. The totem pole was specific to each family and decorated them accordingly. Kwakiutl houses were built near fishing spots. In the winter, they moved to more protected areas. The roofs were rectangular,either long, slopping, or flat. Sometimes the houses would have stilts to avoid tides, but doorways always faced the ocean. Platforms were built to support the homes. Winter homes were made with frames. House were ten feet wide, one hundred feet long, and twenty feet high.
